Matthew Liu: Chopin Concerto #1 , e-minor
Matthew Liu, age 15, has been studying piano for 9 years and is currently a student of Professor Jack Winerock at the University of Kansas. In 2022, he won the first prize in the young artist concerto competitions by Kansas City Symphony, Topeka Symphony Orchestra, Kansas City Music Teachers Association Heritage Philharmonic. He also won the Best Performance of a Solo Work at the Arthur Fraser International Piano Competition, Southeastern Piano Festival, Columbia, SC, and the first prize in both the solo and single concerto movement divisions at the International Keyboard Odyssiad® Festival, Fort Collins, CO. As one of the six selected students, he studied with Prof. Douglas Humpherys and Boris Slutsky at the 2022 Gina Bachauer International Piano Festival and performed in the final festival concert at Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center, Salt Lake City.
In previous years, he won the best Chopin performance in MTNA junior piano national competition, first prize at International Young Artist Piano Competition in D.C., first prize at Chopin International Competition in Hartford CT, first prize at Paderewski International Piano Competition, first prize at Conero International Piano Competition, and was a semi-finalist at the 2021 Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition. He has performed as a competition winner at venues such as Kaufman Center in Kansas City, Merkin Concert Hall in New York City, the Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel, IN, Ward Recital Hall at Catholic University of America in D.C.
In 2022, he performed twice with Kansas City Symphony under the baton of Michael Stern. In 2019, he performed with Midwestern Chamber as a concerto competition winner, and KC Star commended his performance as “dazzling, …, the music played expressively, … a joy to hear”, and “was phenomenal”. In addition to music, Matthew loves to play tennis and chess, and enjoys
spending time with family and friends.
